I have an issue with my HOSTS file entries getting hijacked by something I've setup concerning the router and a VPN. The HOSTS files works correctly as I'm able to ping the URL and receive a correct response.
Scenario: there's a website that is currently live on the net, https://www.johnstonsautomotive.com, which I have rebuilt and have on my development server. It's ready to deploy and, as I use Akeeba Backup, the URL I need to use is https://www.johnstonsautomotive.com/kickstart.php. Of course, this file does not exist on the current site, so I have edited the HOSTS file with the line <my_local_IP> johnstonsautomotive.com www.johnstonsautomotive.com (done after running as admin).
Something in my VPN/router setup is hijacking this process and sending me to the router login page! Yes, I need to find out what's going on and fix it, but I need to get this new site deployed. Way, way back, I used to use a 3rd party site which did this, but it stopped working 5-6 years ago.
Is there an alternative to deploying a new site where one already exists, other than HOSTS?
